Fun with Typography

I generated this image from a wonderfully diverting website, wordle.net.

The clever tool on this site takes the words generated from any RSS feed and creates a word cloud. Here you see words generated from the RSS feed of this site. If you don’t have a feed from a blog or other such site to use, you can “paste a bunch of text”–song lyrics, Shakespearean sonnets, a favorite poem by Poe, what-have-you, and then generate a colorful burst of wordiness.

Be sure to read the FAQ on Wordle, which explains how to save your image. I took a screenshot, but if I wanted to create a high quality print of my wordy little work of art, I’d need to create a PDF, as explained in Wordle’s FAQ.

So while not quite a collage sheet, I think that the text generated could certainly serve as an element or background in a collage or mixed-media piece.

Victorian Newspaper Advertisements

This collage sheet was adapted from vintage newspaper advertisements. The line art of these old ads is simply wonderful, and there are so many ways that you can use these images.

My favorite craft for these is decoupage.

I just print them out onto parchment paper and cover everything from empty coffee cans (to make crafty pen holders) to blank wooden trays.

Whatever you decide to make with them, please feel free to share, I’d love to see what you can come up with.

A big thank you to all who have contacted me with thank-you messages. I’m having a lot of fun putting these free digital collage sheets together for you and have many more waiting in the wings.

This collage sheet features an assortment of vintage images that have been artistically cropped for use in microscope slide jewelry, which remains a popular craft.

I think they also make nice bookmarks; glue them onto perforated paper, embellish them with decorative stitching, and you have an attractive and useful gift for the reader in your life.
